Japan
Hit by Worst Recorded Snow - 11 words
At least 61 people have died
and more than 1,000 have been
injured in heavy snow in Japan
which started last month.
In some areas the snow is three metres deep and it's believed to be the heaviest
snowfall on Japanese record.
The Japanese army has sent 200
troops to the northern state of Akita and 100
troops to Nagano and Niigata which were the worst effected areas.
The Japanese weather centre has warned that a predicted rise in temperature
could now trigger avalanches.
Many died when the weight of
the snow caused the roofs of their houses to collapse.
The snow, which affected 14
areas, has now stopped in central Japan.
Local authorities have appealed
to members of the public to help
elderly people affected by the snow.
