POIROT
Mr MacQueen, do come in ! I have discovered Mr Ratchett’s real identity.

MacQUEEN
You mean…

POIROT
Yes, Mr Ratchett was Cassetti. He organized the kidnapping of Daisy Armstrong. Of course, you didn’t know that?

MacQUEEN
Oh no! If I had known… I would have used my hands to strangle him, not to type his letters.
Ooops, you’ll be suspecting me now…

POIROT
No. I f you regretted him, yes I would.

MacQUEEN
Daddy – my father – was the prosecutor at the trial. Mrs Armstrong and her husband met him several times.
She was so friendly and benevolent. She was interested in what I wanted to do : become an actor.
She was like a mother to me.

POIROT
May I ask you a Freudian question. You liked your mother, didn’t you?

MacQUEEN
Yes, of course! She died when I was 7. Now go on, tell me that I’m suffering from the Oedipus complex!

POIROT
Calm down, Mr MacQueen, I’m simply investigating. Do calm down !

MacQUEEN
Excuse-me. One last thing : how did you discover his identity?

POIROT
I used a charred fragment of paper and a hat box. I thank you for your help, Mr MacQueen.

BOUC
That’s him ! He’s the one who stabbed Cassetti ! He has just confessed to the crime!

CONSTANTINE
No! That would go against who he is. A very sensitive boy who lost his mother when he was very young. He admired Mrs Armstrong. He was too sensitive and attached to her to commit a crime. No, really !
